Shibori: The Art of Patience and Surprise.
Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dyeing art where fabric is folded, twisted, stitched and bound before it meets the dye. When the bindings are opened, no one knows exactly what pattern will emerge. That beautiful uncertainty is what makes Shibori so special.
In India, our artisans have lovingly embraced this art and crafted it using Natural Indigo Dyes into our own handwoven fabrics. Working with handwoven cotton and Natural Indigo, they fold and bind each fabric by hand, dye it in small batches, and dry it in the Sun.
It is slow, mindful work. No machines, no shortcuts, just skilled hands, natural colors and patience. The result is a piece that can never be repeated. Each shirt carries the touch of the artisan who made it, and the story of a craft that celebrates imperfection as beauty. When you wear Shibori, you wear a piece of art.
Origin and purpose:
Shibori originated in Japan as a traditional resist-dyeing technique. The word Shibori means to wring, squeeze and press.Cloth is folded, twisted, stitched or bound tightly before dyeing, so that the dye cannot reach certain areas. When the bindings are opened, beautiful, unexpected patterns appear.Originally used to decorate kimonos and everyday fabrics, Shibori was a way to create beauty with simple tools, natural dyes and skilled hands. Today, it is celebrated as a slow, sustainable art where each piece is unique and unrepeatable.
Designs:
Shibori offers endless design possibilities, each created by a different way of binding the fabric:
Kanoko Shibori: Small dots created by pinching and tying the fabric, similar to bandhani.
Miura Shibori: Looped stitching that creates soft, water-like patterns.
Kumo Shibori: Pleated and bound sections that form spiderweb-like designs.
Nui Shibori: Stitched Shibori where thread is pulled tight to create fine lines and shapes.
Arashi Shibori: Fabric wrapped diagonally around a pole, creating storm-like diagonal stripes.
Itajime Shibori: Fabric folded and clamped between wooden blocks, creating crisp geometric shapes.
In our collection, these techniques are applied to handwoven Indian cotton dyed in natural indigo, giving each shirt a soft, organic and one-of-a-kind pattern.
Artisans Who Crafted Your Shirt Fabrics.
At Rangamaati, our Shibori is lovingly handcrafted by our kaarigaars, Aadil Anwar, Ummehani and Sarfaraj Khatri.
Working with premium Pure Muslin Cotton and Mulberry Silk, they use traditional Japanese Shibori stitching and binding to prepare each fabric for dyeing. The bound fabrics are then hand-dyed in all-natural, organic indigo, dipped four times with resting time in between, to build a rich, deep indigo.
We dye in small batches to ensure quality, making every design a limited edition. No two pieces are ever alike.Light, breathable and timeless, our Shibori shirts are more than clothing. They carry the care of our artisans, the patience of handcraft, and a commitment to community that inspires the next generation.
Shibori is a dance between nature, hands and time. If you value authenticity, sustainability and unique fashion, our Shibori Collection is made for you.
Crafted in hand loom cotton, the subtle weaving texture is part of the fabric’s natural beauty. The surface ornamentation is created using Shibori — an artful, spontaneous technique where each piece emerges unique and unrepeatable. Any slight variation in color penetration is a natural result of the hand-dyeing process, and becomes part of the charm of a truly handcrafted garment.
HANDCRAFTED NOTE : Slight weaving bumps and slubs are the natural beauty of handloom fabric, not defects. Slight variation in color penetration and pattern is inherent to Shibori hand-dyeing. This is what makes each piece unique. Colour may bleed slightly in the first 1-2 washes due to dyeing with natural indigo and should be read as a sign of authenticity setting it apart from lead based harsh Chemical Indigo Dyes.
