Proudly INDIA

To preserve their beauty, Naturally Dyed fabrics require careful handling.

Washing:

  • Use cold water and a few drops of a mild, pH-neutral detergent.

  • Do not soak for long—Fabrics weakens when left in water.

  • Wash gently without rubbing or wringing.

 Drying:

  • Never wring or twist Cotton/Silk to remove water. Lay flat on a clean towel and roll to absorb moisture.

  • Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Avoid tumble dryers.

 Ironing:

  • Iron on low heat (Cotton setting) while still slightly damp. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.

  • Use steam lightly to remove wrinkles—avoid direct spray of water.

Storage:

  • Wrap in brown paper , avoid plastic covers.

  • Keep in a cool, dry place. Refold periodically to prevent permanent creases.

Onion skin-dyed cotton fabrics achieve a natural yellow, gold, or brown color through a process of extracting dye from onion skins and then immersing pre-wetted cotton fabric in the dye bath. The intensity of the color depends on the amount of onion skins used and the length of the dyeing and steeping time. Our step-by-step process for dyeing cotton Yarns onion skins:

1. Prepare Materials

We Collect best yellow or red onion skins, our weaver's handwoven clean cotton yarns, non-reactive pot, sieve, and protective equipment.

2. We Scour the Cotton Yarns

Wash fabric in hot water with a mild ph(neutral) detergent or soda ash to remove oils and finishes. Rinse thoroughly.

3. Mordant the Fabric

Ready our alum mordant bath (typically 10–15% WOF alum). Heated to ~80°C and simmer the cotton yarns for 45–60 minutes then rinse lightly.

4. Prepare the Dye Bath

Collected Golden Onion Skins are rinsed, placed in pot, cover with water (approx. 1:1 by volume)and heated to a gentle simmer for 45–60 minutes until color extracts fully.

5. Strain the Dye Liquor

Dye expert Artisans remove skins using a sieve to ensure an even dye.Clear dye liquor is transferred to the pot.

6. Dye the Fabric

Dyers add mordanted cotton Yarns to the warm dye bath, maintaining a low simmer for 45–60 minutes, stirring regularly for uniform color.

7. Cool and Soak

Once the boling of the yans is completed ,dyers allow yarns to cool in the dye bath for several hours or overnight to deepen color.

8. Rinse and Wash

Cotton yarns are rinsed in cool water until it runs clear. Finally Dyers Wash gently with pH-neutral soap if needed.

9. Dry and Cure

Dyed Cotton Yarns are hang dried away from direct sunlight. Generally we allow the dyed yarns to rest 24–48 hours to complete color fixation before handweaving them into fabrics.

All fabrics dyed with natural dyes may bleed during the initial washes. The more saturated the color, the greater the risk.

For the first several washes, wash items separately. Dark colors may transfer to lighter ones; it’s recommended to wash dark items separately.

Avoid exposing these fabrics to direct sunlight or intense lighting.

Keep them away from direct application of perfume and deodorant, as the alcohol content can bleach the natural dyes and diminish their beauty.

Pro Tip: Slight color bleeding during the first few washes is normal—it’s part of the appeal of vegetable-dyed, eco-friendly fabrics. Handle with care, and they will develop character beautifully.
